A crazy idea has just dawned on me: Japan has and will be in the near future exposed to so much radiation (Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Fukushima) that I shall not be surprised if the Japanese will be the first nation in the world to naturally develop gamma-radiation immunity!

Of cause, radiation exposure kills you, but, if sustained, it might also (and this is NOT a proposal of any sort in any case!), cause the organism to mutate in order to adjust to the new environmental threat. From the evolutionary point of view, the time frame is very short, but still..
